I started on the Atlanta for my Daughter. I do not know what is wrong with her, but she refuses to fight on the Axis side. The super is finished except for the 5 in turrets, which I plan on getting from Grey wolf, Brian K. As she sits not she is 2 pounds 3 oz, the turrets will weigh .9 oz. I figure once I cut the windows, and sheet, she will be right at 2 pounds even. So that leaves 7 pounds for all the internals, peice of cake.
I love the superstructure! By any chance, what did you use for the gun tubs? I'm considering cutting thin copper pipe, but I think that would still be pretty heavy and I like to see what others have done.
klems, if you can get some thin rubber sheet I have found that works well. I've also seen people try using balsa, but that is penetrable and tends to disappear after a few battles. djranier, I find it interesting how you build the superstructure first. is there any particular reason for that? It's looking mighty spiffy, but I'm curious why you went for the upperworks first.
I did not make it, another club member did Frank. He is retired army and out of work, so the local club members have been trying to help him out by paying him to build superstructures which he happens to like doing, and which I hate to do, so it helps out both of us. He built the Kumano super for me also, I like doing the internals myself. Each ship I build is getting cleaner and cleaner. In the Kumano, all the electronics are behind the stern turret. All you see in the center is the 2 solenoids, bottle, pump and battery. The bow section is totally empty. In the picture of the Kumano you can see he went a little crazy with the super, but since I payed him with his Mogami hull, and stuff to get it running, he wanted to do a very good job. Maybe it will win best of class at Nats, never thought about that, but Don's Miami looks sweet also, so we will have to see. On the Atlanta super I asked him to keep it as simple as possible, and this is what he considers simple. He called me at least once a day asking if he could add additional stuff to it, I let him add the tubs, but we had a set price, so I did not want to take advantage of him. Plus the stuff will get shot off anyways over time.
How much is Frank asking for SS work? I have a couple of ships that could use nice SS and Frank's a great guy who I'd hate to see having trouble.
Give him a call, his prices vary by how much detail you want. The Atlanta took him 5 weeks from start to finish. He is working on a super for Don right now, and is doing it faster so we can ship the boat to Nats, so it will be ready in 3 weeks. I got him a KK hull from Bob Pottle, and he is in love with it, and wants to start work on it as soon as possible. It has so many possibilities for arming it. Twin in line rudders, so it has the 50% rule in play. Short so it should turn on a dime I would think. He is thinking 15 deg forward casemate haymaker guns, and just using it on high speed runs, 22 sec ship, down the side of the big ships. So he will need some extra cash to help him build the KK.
