I am building a 1/144 Lutzow and want to put brushless motors in them. I like the power and size of them for this build. However, I dont understand brushless size numbers at all. I need two for the drive and one for the pump. Preferably all the same voltage. Any help would be appreciated

Brushless motors do not have voltage ratings. I would recommend two 2830 700 kv motors direct drive. You will also need two 30 amp bi directional esc's I use this setup on all my light and heavy cruisers

How come you have to use two ESCs? How do you hook up both to the receiver?

Because they are brushless and if you try to drive two motors with one ESC you could burn up that ESC. Brushless phased motors. If you stall one it will stall both. You just hook them up with a Y cable to the Rx.
I run dual brushed off a single ESC and can stall one motor and limp along on the other.

What size props are you using with that setup?

For Lutzow I’d use four blade 1.25” or 1.5”. I lean more to the 1.25”.

Sweet! That's what I got! Should have the motors here by Sunday. Should be able to get the pump, drive motors, and rudder in next week.

Do you have a good technique to set the shafts correctly? I'm semi happy with where they are now but was hoping to make them better.

Got some photos. Easier to look at them than type.

I like to draw a couple of circles on a piece of scrap plywood, the size of my props, separated by 1/16". Use this to make a template, cut it out, an drill it, then put your prop shafts through it and use it on the outside of the hull to align the shafts. On the inside, either do something similar, or use the gearboxes, etc.

    I hope that made sense.

From my research I have found that 2 brushless motors and 2 esc’s is possible. YOU HAVE TO on 1 esc or on the Y splitter remove a positive lead. The Y splitter to the throttle channel will power up both motors and esc’s in harmony at the same time no glitches.

I’m about to build a USS Texas.
My questions are do I use 2 marine esc’s or not? What size brushless motors? What amps am I supposed to be operating at in IRCWCC Ruling?

750 kv seems small. For a BB setup.

Motor KV is going to depend on the battery voltage that you choose. For example, I've been running a pair of 36mm dia x 50mm long 2500KV inrunner motors for drive in my ships for several years on ~6v (2s LiFePo3 batteries). That's going into a gearbox at ~2:1 ratio. I control them with a pair of Hobbywing 10BL60 ESCs using 1 channel on the receiver and a Y connector (I do clip the red wire inside the arms of the Y to isolate the BECs in the ESCs). This combo worked quite well for Seydlitz, Tiger, and North Carolina. NC might have been a little heavy for the 36x50mm motors long term. If I was going for a bigger ship like Bismarck, Vanguard, etc, I'd likely look for some slightly larger motors in that same KV range. You'll know if the motors are big enough by how much heat they put off at the end of a sortie. If you can't touch them, they're too small.

I'll probably step up to 12v for my next large BB (mainly to cut amp draw on the pump across the wiring) so I'll be looking for some 1200KVish motors for drive.

You're not trying to get exactly on speed with the motor itself, just into a comfortable margin faster than your target speed. You have the gears for coarse adjustment and the esc for fine adjustment. I'm very happy if I'm around the 80% range on the ESC and on speed at the end of the day.

Thank you that is a fantastic suggestion lunnrais. I asked and I received information that I needed. I understand what you’re telling me. Just be clear.

2 12v 1200kv brushless motors for my BB Texas should work well. Then use the 2 ESC’s to dial it back so I’m at the proper speed on the rules.

I guess what motors. I need to see them not pic. But the exact numbers you would use.
