I'm putting together my drive systems for both Lil' Scharney (IRC - 26 seconds driving 1 prop @ 6.4V) and Steampunk Panzerkreuzer (one plastic prop, whatever speed we can get, 6.4V)

Likely will go geared on both.

I am quite familiar with both the good & bad of 550-can brushed motors, and would be ok with using them for these boats. But I wanted to see if there was a better setup out there now that brushless prices have come down so much...

    Recommendations?

Since I don't have a stock of propellers & gears handy, I can put any size system together as I'm starting from scratch.

Tugboat talked me into trying brushless, and I must say I'm glad I did. There are several advantages, and the only big disadvantages are cost and learning curve. I don't know what size brushless would relate to a 550, but I would recommend doing some research on them, and try to find one that is as close to a drop in replacement for a 550 as possible (if that's the size brushed you were going to use). My reasoning is that if you find a brushless close to the same physical size, shaft diameter, and that has the same mounting configuration as a 550 and it doesn't work out, you can swap in a 550 that will bolt right in and all you are out is a few bucks and haven't built yourself into a corner.

Brushless motors have mountains of torque, and they don't melt and erupt with sparks and fire when you run an 11.1v LiPo battery in your Traxxas Slash. I have two identical 1:10 touring cars. The only difference is that one of them is brushless. The brushed one does 22mph, and the brushless one does 45mph with the same battery.

Jeffy, you break my heart. Scharnie was made for brushless. It takes less room and it is glorious for improving the cut and thrust maneuverability (lots of torque in that small package). I will email you my secret recipe for brushless Scharnie drive...

    Guys.
The issue with brishless is both motors have to have a speed control, right?? I was kicking the idea around with Savannah but she's getting two working motors..
