    Hello folks,
My son (12) & I are setting out to build our first RC warship. We're reading up on just about all that we can find online, this looks like a great place to start.
A natural first question -- do the rules limit the number of cannons that you can put on a ship, based on its Class? (Stability notwithstanding, of course.) :p
    Thanks,
    John & Matthew Kern

Depends upon which rule set you are building to. Fast gun limits guns per class of ship, Big Gun let you arm most of the guns on a ship plus torpedoes. Which rule set depends upon where you are, the club closest to you is probably what rule set you should build to.

I see you are in New York, so you will probably want to read up on the IRCWCC rules first. They have a really strong presence there. You should get in touch with Iceman and Ming the Merciless, they are great guys and have a lot of experience building, will be able to answer all your questions and provide some construction assistance.

    Welcome aboard.
We have members in upstate NY, NYC, and NJ.
We get together every couple of months to build or battle. Last one was before Christmas and I am planning a Monday the 27th for Feb.
(when my friend and I have off)

be sure to ask away and if you get stuck, we're in the area. Also this spring there will be battles to catch.

While I agree that you should look at the IRCWCC rule set (since they're the ones battling in your area), the important thing is are you going axis or allied :)

    Welcome to the hobby!

Axis are okay and teachable, if you catch them while they are young!

Thanks to all for the quick replies and advice on the rules to follow. I've joined the NYBG Group on Yahoo, and will look to see if we can make it to an event this spring.
As for the Allied/Axis question, well, my son wanted to get in with a smaller ship to start with (wise, I think), and he settled on a French Mogador. He liked how it looked on the Battler's Connection website...
So, we're starting out with the planning... Found a very nice build thread for this same ship here on this forum -- that is some excellent news...
    Thanks!

    Nikki,

Thanks for the note! Would be great to get down to MD, but it's a bit of a haul and the Commodore probably wouldn't approve my request. Shooting to attend something a little closer the first time, and then who knows!

Hi John, one thing to consider when choosing a boat is that the smaller the build the more difficult and costly it can be. Smaller boats require smaller and therefore more costly parts. Something a little bigger is usually better to starts with, like a larger class 3 (i.e. Graf Spee) or class 4 ( like a nice VDT or Westfallen for example) make for a easier, less expensive boat. I am not trying to influence you to build Axis ( although they are WAY, WAY better) I just don't know too many of the target, I mean Allied large 3s and 4s. ;)
Welcome aboard to you and your boy.

    J,

Thanks for the sage advice. Unfortunately, I let this one get away from me a bit and we ordered the hull before I realized that we were tackling a tougher (and Allied) build (another guy had similar advice). So now we're in for a challenge, but I think we're going to give it a shot. Been reading a lot on this forum and other resources, and learning some each weekend. Might consider posting some build pics in a new thread, and let folks see if I'm heading for the rocks...

    Thanks!
    John

Absolutely post pics, we always like to see a new build. You should start a build thread, post pics, ask questions etc. That way people can offer advice and point you in the right direction if you get stuck.

John, you might contact Battler's and see where they are in the process (if you haven't received your ship yet). I don't know their lead time, but I know if we don't have a ship in stock, it can take a little bit for our fiberglass shop to make it up. If you do want to try to change, there might be a chance. In any case, this is a great forum to come to for support in making it!

Thanks, Keri. We already have the hull, though. BC shipped it pretty much instantly, I think. And this forum is great; we found Steve Tyng's build thread for the exact same ship. Really a great reference. Without it, I'm pretty sure we'd back away from this hull. But with it, well, we're going to give it a shot... I'll try to post the adventure...
