Hello all! I started yapping about the ship I recently acquired and am rebuilding in the thread on ESC's, so now I'm officially starting my build thread. I'll cut and paste my ESC thread comments here to start things off and then take some photos to get my build properly started. Bear with me, this is my first build, eh? KK, that brings me up to date on the ship, except after tomorow's motor tests I'll be installing the rudder servo for testing. If motors and rudder works my next step is to re-sheet it, and won't that be fun? I'm just leaving the battery and reciever + ESC laying loose during all my testing, I'll figure out the rest of the placements later once propulsion works. Then it will be water channeling and installing the bilge pump before I try floating it.
Very cool, can we see some pics, paul's ones from his blackberry werent that great(no offense paul, but ya know)
HMS Dreadnaught initial rebuilding photos from day#1. Only tweaking done so far was removing the driveshafts to sand them, grease them, and re-install to make them spin better. Also moved starboard motor mount forward about 1/16" to allow play in shaft where it was rubbing and stalling. The next step will be stripping and re-sheeting the hull to get it ready for float, motor, and rudder control tests. It's only a few days to the Treaty club meet and I hope to have it at least "float worthy" to conduct speed and handling trials, which is why I'm sheeting next instead of carrying on with controls and gunnery. I took the photos with my Fuji Finepix S700 camera (7.1 Megapixel) in 4.0 megapizel format, then reduced them to 25% size before posting them. Posting full sized 7mp or 4mp images would have been way too big for the forums, IMHO. I have several other photos but couldn't think of any other angle people might like to see. Please let me know what other "traditional" shots might be welcome. HMS Dreadnaught, port side profile HMS Dreadnaught, starboard side profile HMS Dreadnaught showing bow, port side where the sheeting was peeled back for inspection. Looked really, really scary and horrible to a newbie at first glance. LOL HMS Dreadnaught, propellers and rudders HMS Dreadnaught, engine mounts and rudders HMS Dreadnaught, bow spaces and CO2 bottle stowage HMS Dreadnaught, centre fuselage space
May I state, for the record, that stripping off old sheeting is a complete, grade-A, major pain-in-the-butt!!!!! LOL, already up to 4 minor cuts and scrapes removing the major sheeting. Now I have to clean up the windows and smooth things down so I can re-sheet tonite or tomorrow (latest). Editted: HMS Dreadnaught all striped and partially cleaned up. Note the circle drawn around the 2nd and 3rd rib. It only measures 0.8" wide between them so I presume from reading the rules I will have to remove one of the ribs to make it strictly legal. IT is minimum 1" between ribs, right?
Are you measuring from the rib's center to the next center? the full text of the 1" rule is Ribs shall not be spaced less than 1" apart measured from their centers
Measured from their CENTERS! Doh! LOL, I love it when someone points out the obvious to me. Remeasured the ribs and they're fine, just over 1" center to center. Thanks!
Hey! Be careful talking like that. I just may try and take you up on it. LOL You coming to the build session on Saturday? I'm still negotiating my absence from the store in order to go.
Hey, looking good so far! How will you arm her? You could have a couple of haymakers back there, wouldn't that be fun? :-D
Well, she's pretty slow in either IRCWCC or especially treaty rules so concensus seems to suggest I try two sidemounts (port & starboard) and a single stern gun. Minimizes my undefended area and a bow gun would be mostly useless, I think, 'cause I sure ain't catchin' nothing with her. If I try using the wing turrets for sidemounts I'm going to have to use short barrels and put them at an angle as it would be very easy to broadside someone during manouvering and poke a hole in them with the overhanging gun barrels. I know it would probably be insane to try, but those two wing turrets keep tempting me to aim them back and give her a triple stern setup. (stern + 2 wing turrets) It would be fun to try, but I'm pretty sure I'll be arming her as suggested, 2 sidemounts + 1 stern.
It looks like you could use the mains for sides. The front one would give you nice down angle, the back would be nasty surprise turret. I would use rubber cement to resheet, you don't have to be perfect to reattach and it is easier than ca. Also when you get to the rebuild, you may want to rething the rudder/prop placement as the turning will be affected by them not being lined up. (unless the ruleset you follow prohibits it)Nice ship and not one you see normally!
The dreadnaught actually turns quite well in the set up there. When it turns it turns on a dime. Getting access to the rudder area will be a pain with the small hatch.
Hi Paul, Yeah, already found than out. But now that I have it stripped access is easy. I'm also thinking about cutting a couple of the deck covers larger for better access, most notably the one over the rudder mount like you mentioned.
I'd imagine with that set up, she holds speed fairly well in a turn as well, as some thrust will continue to propel the ship forward as opposed to 100% of the thrust going into turning the ship.
When she did sail she turned very well. Granted it was not at required speed but responded very well in a turn.
