Well I finally got some time to work on the boat, it may not make it to Hagerstown unless I get it all done in the next 10 days. Built and installed the stern guns, they are rocking. I built some Geek guns, tired of tweaking guns. From the turret to the end of the barrel is 5 inches, MWC allows for 6 total, so I'm in good shape. Making the side mounts about 1/2 a inch shorter. I still need to install the pump outlet also.
Can you show how the Geek Breech guns were constructed? I'm interested in the breech mechanism. I see the o-ring breeches all the time, but I've never seen an in-focus photo of a geek-breech gun.
interesting article but, I am surprised that I got no credit for the FIRST GEEK gun brought to the hobby in 1984, Carlo
Maybe Pete who wrote the sheet did not know that you made the first one? I did mine a little different than what is shown. I machined down a 90 fitting that BC uses for their guns, and I'm using steel rifled BB barrels for my barrels. I was suprised at how much straighter and consistant they are over the regular barrels.
The original GEEK was SIMPLE in every way. 5mm windshield washer hose 1/4" brake line for the uptake and K&S brass for the barrel. Fixed the end of the barrel to the deck with a elevating bracket and your done.
I was making the side mounts today, and took a couple of pictures of the Geek guns. Apart. Almost fully assembeled.
Worked on the ID fro the last coupple of days, I think she will be completed tomorrow if all goes well. Here is a video I made last week of my rear cannon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMtnzK2UdNs Enjoy.
She is ready for Nats finally, for a British ship, she is really not too bad looking. I had my daughter paint the boats to add a little color. Now to check out the Sri and make sure she is ready to go also. I had to add more deck hold downs after the Savannah battle, I sank a few times, but not due to damage, the for and aft deck was letting in so much water she was sinking. Added gasket material, and tripled deck hold downs. Side mounts are at 20 deg down angle, Don thinks that is best, but I think they need to come up a bit, but only another battle will tell.
Hi Mikey I think with it being in Denver and with the state of the economy, it has scared some people off. Plus I know of some that have lost their jobs, so they will not be making it. Right now I think we have 31 signed up. Usually a couple more show up, so maybe 32 to 34, down like 15 from last year. Of course I go allied this year, damm Don C, LOL, and we are out numbered pretty bad. I was just reading the 1989 hullbusters, when Nats was held in Tenn, and the Axis lost due to being overwhelmed by numbers, it may happen to the Allieds this year.
What did you use to cut the holes for the turret barbetts? I'm afraid if I cut them with a saw they won't come out circular. Also, is your upper superstructure completely plywood? By the way, I read castles of steel too, that's why I chose the ID.
Dave, I was at that Nats. Part of the reason that the Axis got beat so bad is because some of the hard hitters were running cruisers. I can still remember chasing Fluegel all over the pond. Any idea where next years Nats will Be? Thanks,
Carl, Sorry about that article, I had it pulled from the MWC web site (to be revised). I'm not sure how it got out with the 'typo', it was supposed to give credit for that style of Geek gun, not for the whole family of them, and certainly not the first one! I guess someone else should proof read my articles. Sorry about all that. ----- Pete D.
I used a 1 3/4 hole saw. Makes a nice neat hole, then I routered the edges 1/8 around, 1/16 deep, so that the 2 inch grey conduit fit snugley into it.
I get mine from this site, they usually ship them out right away, and their prices are not too bad. http://www.rcmart.com/catalog/motor-esc-esc-car-fet-c-293_51.html?manufacturers_id=112&sort=1a Lou sent me this link, and they are even a little lower prices than rcmart, but I have not purchased from them yet. http://www.cnc-models.com/cnc8_046.htm
