I am slowly rebuilding my old Indomitable, it may be ready by spring. My contention that I think the I-boats are the best class 4 ships does not imply that the Kiri is not a great ship; I have a partial Kirishima hanging on the wall waiting to be completed Bonus for the Kiri over the class 4 pigboats is that the bulged version is just long enough to be able to mount 2 sidemounts on one side (but you already know that!). I'd be so tempted to try two rotating sidemounts (firing together) and a single stern gun. Kiri is also a really pretty boat to look at, which is never a bad thing. Unless you're the Hood! [Achtung! Fire at zee PRETTY one!!! KABOOM]
I always liked the I-boats. The hulls are a little cramped but, in the right hands they are like a little bull dog.
The Kongos are some of the prettiest ships of their era. The sweeping lines, the piled-high pagodas, the casemates. I love 'em! Of course on the performance side they deliver too. Sidemounts of glory! Do you have any more build pictures to show off?
They are the best of the refits. One of the few ships of that era that looks better with the refits than it did as built.
Bob, I have thought about it, and part of my love for Indomitable is probably based ont he type of lake we battle on around here; short tubby boats do well in our restricted waters around the island and in 'The Slot'. At a bigger pond, the faster BCs would probably be more fun. I am in concurrence with Brandon... we want more pics!!
Bob, you must have forgotten about the other Kongo you built. A photo of it in action: http://www.portpolarbear.com/RESOURCES/NATS2008/nats076.html You make good ships.
Why thank you for those kind words Specialist. I love to build and take pride in my work. That picture brings back some great memories. I am looking to tke on a new project in wood over the winter. I am looking at Roma, Doria, Fuso or a Scharnhorst. The thing I like about scratch building in wood is that you get to build the ship the way you want to build it. If you want to make a short cut you dictate where and what, not someone else. It's all about having fun.
As far as pictures, I can't load them on here. I have trouble loading on RCN, computer locks up and all. I pasted some pictures a couple of days ago on our Treaty Yahoo site.
I think I have plans for Roma, Doria, and Big Scharnie. Have to check, some haven't been scanned in yet.
Yeah, but I'll leave it to you to build With a few of my hulls sold, I am down to 30 ships or so in various stages of existence in my shop (this is NOT a point of pride, it's kind of embarrassing, actually). I am going to repair some, sell some, etc until the numbers get lower (or at least the numbers of non-battle-ready ships get lower). Plus I _did_ promise some future students a class on scratchbuilding a Deutschland-class predreadnought. So I have way too much to do anyway
I was able to get the aft deck laid out tonight. Might start cutting it out. May wait until tomorrow night. Thanks
I did manage to get the aft deck cut out tonight. A little sanding and it should be good to go. Next, the forward deck. Bobosan
Another update. I got the stern deck fitted. I'm very happy with how it turned out. Tomorrow, the forward deck. I posted 4 new pictures. Bobosan
Just got done laying out the subdeck area where the step is. This is the area of "Q" turret. The deck or decks will lift off and separate at the step deck. This should really open up the hull for easy access. Bobosan Build it and they will come.
